Former Senior NIS Officer and Raila Odinga’s Cousin Job Odima Atinga Dies
Former senior National Intelligence Service (NIS) officer Job Odima Atinga, a cousin of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has died, prompting an outpouring of condolences from the Odinga family and mourners in Siaya County.
Atinga’s death was announced by Raila’s sister, Ruth Odinga, who said the family had gathered in Alego Kakan, Siaya County, to mourn the veteran intelligence officer.
In a condolence message issued on Friday, July 31, Ruth described Atinga as a dedicated public servant whose career was defined by integrity, courage and commitment to national security.
“This evening, I came to Alego Kakan to sit with the family of my late cousin, Mr Job Odima Atinga, as we mourn his untimely passing,” Ruth said.
According to Ruth, Atinga served for many years as a senior officer in the NIS before his final posting at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Nyanza Regional Office.
She said his career was devoted to protecting Kenya’s peace and security, adding that his professionalism and commitment to duty earned him the respect of his colleagues.
“Job served this country with distinction as a senior officer in the NIS, and his final posting at the DCI Nyanza Regional Office demonstrated a life that was dedicated to the peace and security of our nation,” she said.
“His was a career built on integrity, courage, and quiet, selfless service to Kenya,” Ruth added.
Family mourns veteran public servant
Ruth also extended her condolences to Atinga’s widow, Syprose Odupe Atinga, and their children, assuring them that the wider family would stand with them during the mourning period.
“To my sister-in-law, Syprose Odupe Atinga, and to Job’s children. Our family grieves with you. We will continue to walk with you through this difficult season,” she said.
Atinga’s death comes as the wider Odinga family continues to mourn several significant losses.
The family was plunged into mourning following the death of Raila Odinga on October 15, 2025, aged 80. Raila died in Kerala, India, after suffering a cardiac arrest while on a morning walk.
The death of Raila, one of Kenya’s most prominent opposition figures and a former prime minister, triggered a wave of tributes from political leaders across Kenya and beyond.
The family suffered another bereavement weeks later following the death of Raila’s sister, Beryl Achieng Odinga, in November 2025 after a prolonged illness.
Atinga’s death now adds another loss to a family that has endured a series of bereavements in recent months, with relatives and mourners gathering in Siaya to pay their respects to the former intelligence officer.
